Trench heater vs radiator: which to choose

June 20, 2026

Trench heaters and radiators both heat a room using warm water, but they look and perform very differently — especially near large windows. This article compares a trench heater vs a radiator and helps you decide. New to the topic? Start with What is a trench heater.

The main difference: placement

  • A radiator is mounted on the wall and is visible in the room. Along floor-to-ceiling glazing there is often no wall to mount it on.
  • A trench heater is recessed into the floor along the glazing. Only a slim grille is visible, and it forms a thermal curtain exactly where cold air falls — at the glass.

Performance near glazing

Large windows create cold downdraughts and condensation. A trench heater placed at the glass line counteracts this directly with a rising curtain of warm air. A wall radiator, set away from the glazing, is less effective at stopping the downdraught.

Aesthetics and space

  • Radiator — occupies wall space and is visible; limits furniture placement.
  • Trench heater — invisible in the floor; walls and sills stay free for design freedom.

Installation

A radiator is simpler to install and can be added at any time. A trench heater is best planned during construction or renovation, as it is recessed into the floor screed. Where floor recessing isn’t possible, a freestanding water convector is an alternative that still sits neatly along the glazing.

Which to choose

  • For ordinary walls without large glazing, a radiator is simple and sufficient.
  • For panoramic windows, glazed façades and open-plan interiors, a trench heater performs better and stays invisible.

Both connect to the same hydronic heating system, so they can be combined within one building.

Konveka trench heaters

Konveka is a European manufacturer of hydronic trench heaters and fan coils since 2005, with stainless-steel casings, EC fans and testing to EN 442 and EN 16430. See models FH4-H, FH4-M and FC, or the full range. Need help choosing? Contact our export team.

Frequently asked questions

Is a trench heater better than a radiator? Near large glazing, yes — it controls cold draughts and condensation and stays invisible. For ordinary walls, a radiator is simpler and cheaper.

Can trench heaters and radiators be combined? Yes. Both run on the same hydronic system, so a building can use radiators in some rooms and trench heaters along glazing.

Do trench heaters heat as well as radiators? Yes. Fan-assisted trench heaters deliver high output for their size; natural-convection models suit quieter spaces.

Can I install a trench heater in an existing building? It requires recessing into the floor, so it’s best during renovation. Otherwise consider a freestanding water convector.
