Fan coil vs air conditioner: what’s the difference
June 21, 2026
A fan coil and an air conditioner both cool (and often heat) the air, so they are easily confused. But they are differently engineered systems. Let’s look at how a fan coil differs from an air conditioner and which to choose for a home or a project. For the basics, see What is a fan coil unit.
The key difference: the medium
- An air conditioner (split system) runs on refrigerant: the outdoor unit compresses the refrigerant, and the indoor unit cools the air with it.
- A fan coil runs on water: it is supplied with cold (from a chiller) or hot (from a boiler/heat pump) water, and a fan blows air across the heat exchanger.
Every other difference follows from this.
System scale
- An air conditioner typically serves one room (or a few — multi-split/VRF).
- A fan coil is part of a centralised system: one source (chiller, boiler, heat pump) feeds many units across the whole building. More in Chiller and fan coils.
Comparison
| Parameter | Air conditioner (split) | Fan coil |
| Medium | Refrigerant | Water |
| Scale | 1–few rooms | Dozens of rooms |
| Source | Outdoor unit | Chiller / boiler / heat pump |
| Heating | Limited (heat-pump mode) | Yes (from boiler/heat pump) |
| Best for | Apartments, single rooms | Hotels, offices, large projects |
Heating
An air conditioner heats only in heat-pump mode and loses efficiency at low temperatures. A fan coil heats from the water system (boiler, heat pump) steadily all season — for buildings with water-based heating it is the natural solution.
Which to choose
- For a single apartment or room, an air conditioner is simpler and cheaper.
- For a building with many rooms (hotel, office, mall) and an existing water system, fan coils are more efficient and easier to scale.

Frequently asked questions
How does a fan coil differ from an air conditioner in simple terms? An air conditioner runs on refrigerant and usually serves one room; a fan coil runs on water and integrates into a building-wide system.
Which is more economical? For one room — an air conditioner; for a large building with a water system — fan coils.
Can a fan coil cool like an air conditioner? Yes, with cold water from a chiller a fan coil cools the room.Does a fan coil need an outdoor unit? No. The source is a chiller, boiler or heat pump shared by the whole system.
