Types of fan coil units: what they are and how to choose
June 21, 2026
Fan coil units differ by mounting type, number of pipes and casing design. The right type ensures efficient heating and cooling and blends neatly into the interior. Let’s go through the main types of fan coil units. For the basics, see What is a fan coil unit.
Fan coil types by mounting
This is the primary classification — it determines how the unit is installed and where it fits.
Ducted fan coils (DF)
Concealed above a suspended ceiling, with air supplied and returned through ducts. Completely hidden — only the grilles are visible. → Ducted fan coils DF
Cassette fan coils (CF)
Recessed into a suspended ceiling, distributing air in several directions. Ideal for offices, shops and large open rooms. → Cassette fan coils CF
Wall-mounted fan coils (HWF)
Compact units for wall mounting — a simple solution for individual rooms. → Wall-mounted fan coils HWF
Trench fan coils (FCH, FCHV)
Built into the floor along glazing and left invisible. Indispensable for panoramic windows and storefronts. → Trench fan coils FCH/FCHV
Fan coil types by number of pipes
- 2-pipe — one circuit; heating or cooling at a time. Simpler and cheaper.
- 4-pipe — separate heating and cooling circuits; simultaneous heating and cooling. For large facilities. More in 2-pipe vs 4-pipe fan coil units.
Fan coil types by casing
- With casing — a finished unit with a decorative cover, for exposed installation;
- Without casing (built-in) — installed concealed (above ceilings, in the floor), no cover needed.
How to choose a type
Consider the mounting location (ceiling, wall, floor), the required capacity, the interior (whether concealed mounting is needed), the number of pipes and the noise level (EC fans are quiet). More in How to choose a fan coil unit.

Frequently asked questions
What types of fan coil units are there? By mounting — ducted, cassette, wall-mounted and trench; by pipes — 2-pipe and 4-pipe; by casing — with casing and built-in.
What is the difference between a ducted and a cassette fan coil? A ducted unit is fully concealed above the ceiling and works through ducts; a cassette unit is recessed into the ceiling and distributes air in several directions.
Which fan coil suits panoramic windows? A trench unit (FCH/FCHV) — it is built into the floor along the glazing and stays invisible.
Which fan coil is the quietest? Any type with EC fans; for quiet zones choose models with speed control.
