How to choose a fan coil unit

June 20, 2026

The right fan coil unit delivers comfortable temperatures, runs quietly and saves energy. The wrong choice leads to insufficient capacity or excess noise. This guide covers what to consider when choosing a fan coil unit. New to the topic? Start with What is a fan coil unit.

1. Capacity (heating and cooling)

The key parameter. Capacity is sized from the room’s heat loss and heat gain (area, glazing, use). Consider both modes — heating and cooling — as their outputs differ. Undersizing won’t keep the room comfortable; oversizing wastes money and causes short-cycling.

2. Mounting type

The installation location determines the unit type — ducted, cassette, wall-mounted or trench. See ducted vs cassette fan coil units for the most common choice in ceilings.

3. 2-pipe or 4-pipe

  • 2-pipe — simpler and cheaper; heating or cooling at a given time.
  • 4-pipe — simultaneous heating and cooling in different rooms; for larger buildings.

The unit must match the building’s pipe scheme.

4. Noise level

For bedrooms, offices and hotels, noise is critical. Modern EC fans are significantly quieter and more efficient than conventional fans, and smooth speed control reduces noise at low settings.

5. Controls and automation

Ease of use depends on controls: a room thermostat, valves and actuator, and per-room temperature control. For projects, compatibility with the building management system matters.

6. Quality and durability

Check the materials: a stainless-steel casing resists corrosion and lasts longer; a copper–aluminium heat exchanger transfers heat efficiently. Testing to standards (EN 442, EN 16430) confirms the stated performance.

7. Documentation and support

For project work, the manufacturer should provide technical catalogues, selection tables, BIM files and engineering support — this speeds up design and reduces errors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size a fan coil unit? From the room’s heat loss and heat gain (area, glazing, use), separately for heating and cooling. A precise calculation is best done by a specialist.

Which fan coil unit is quietest? Models with EC fans and speed control are the quietest.

Do I need a 4-pipe system? Only if you need to heat and cool different rooms at the same time. Most projects are fine with 2-pipe.What’s the difference between a fan coil and a convector when choosing? A convector usually heats only (often without a fan); a fan coil can heat and cool. The choice depends on whether cooling is required.
