Ducted vs cassette fan coil units: differences and which to choose
June 20, 2026
Ducted and cassette fan coil units are two of the most common types for commercial and residential projects. Both heat and cool using water, but they conceal and distribute air differently. This article compares ducted vs cassette fan coil units. For the basics, see What is a fan coil unit.
Ducted fan coil units (DF)
A ducted fan coil unit is concealed above a suspended ceiling and connected to ductwork. Air is drawn in and supplied through grilles that can be positioned away from the unit. The result is completely hidden equipment — only discreet supply and return grilles are visible. → Ducted fan coils DF
Best for: premium interiors, hotels and residences where no equipment should be visible, and where air needs to reach several points from one unit.
Cassette fan coil units (CF)
A cassette fan coil unit is mounted directly into the suspended ceiling, with a visible square face that distributes air in multiple directions. Installation is simpler than ducted (no ductwork), and one unit covers a wide area evenly. → Cassette fan coils CF
Best for: offices, retail and larger open spaces where even, multi-directional air distribution is needed and a visible ceiling grille is acceptable.
Comparison
| Criterion | Ducted (DF) | Cassette (CF) |
| Visibility | Fully hidden (grilles only) | Visible ceiling face |
| Ductwork | Required | Not required |
| Air distribution | Flexible, via ducts | Multi-directional from the unit |
| Installation | More complex | Simpler |
| Best for | Premium/hidden interiors | Offices, open spaces |
Which to choose
- Choose ducted (DF) when the interior must stay completely clean and air should be delivered to specific points.
- Choose cassette (CF) for straightforward installation and even coverage of larger spaces from a single ceiling unit.
Both connect to the same hydronic (and chiller) system — see chiller and fan coil systems for how central cooling works. They can also be combined within one building.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ducted and cassette fan coil units? Ducted units are hidden above the ceiling and use ductwork; cassette units mount into the ceiling with a visible face and distribute air in several directions.
Which is easier to install? Cassette units — they don’t require ductwork.
Which is more discreet? Ducted units — only small grilles are visible, the unit itself is fully concealed. Can both heat and cool? Yes. Both are hydronic fan coils and can heat (warm water) and cool (chilled water).
