Fan coils for heat pump cooling

A modern building rarely needs only heating. When a reversible heat pump or a chiller supplies chilled water, fan coils turn that water into comfortable cooling — from the same hydronic circuit that provides heating in winter. This makes fan coils the most flexible emitter for year-round comfort, and a natural partner for heat pumps that both heat and cool.

How a fan coil cools

A fan coil passes room air across a coil fed with chilled water (typically 7–12 °C). The air gives up heat and, when required, moisture, and returns to the room cooler. Because the fan controls airflow, output adjusts quickly to the load, and several units can share one chilled-water circuit — far simpler than installing separate split air-conditioners in every room.

2-pipe and 4-pipe systems

In a 2-pipe system the same pair of pipes carries hot or chilled water depending on the season. In a 4-pipe system heating and cooling water are available at the same time, so different zones can heat and cool simultaneously — ideal for buildings with mixed loads such as hotels and offices. Choosing the right unit
